“King Kong”

Whats on TV today Monday 15 August 2022

USA-New Zealand, 2005 (180 minutes). Director: Peter Jackson. Cast: Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, Jack Black.

After the monumental trilogy of The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson has fulfilled a personal dream and revived the legendary King Kong. The result is a mammoth film of overly long duration but containing some of the most shocking sequences in recent years. In the first hour of footage, Jackson exemplifies the aesthetics of classic cinema and moves his characters with unprecedented ease. While the film descends into excess after the appearance of the giant gorilla, the imagery reflects the filmmaker’s love for his story. All current blockbusters want to contain half of King Kong’s cinema.

USA, 1980 (120 minutes). Director: John Cassavetes. Starring: Gena Rowlands, Buck Henry, Julie Carmen.

American independent cinema had a father: John Cassavetes, a filmmaker who championed innovative cinema in the 1970s, far removed from commercial assumptions. Gloria is a mature work, far from the aggressive avant-garde of his first films, which narrates the relationship between a woman and a child pursued by the mafia. Gena Rowlands is the actress and the city of New York is another character in the action in a masterpiece by an inimitable director.

Spain, 2019 (125 minutes). Directed by Jonas Trueba. Cast: Itsaso Arana, Vito Sanz, Joe Manjon.

The pure and luminous cinema of Jonás Trueba explodes, flawless and bold, in La Virgen de Agosto. A journey to the cinematic essence, concretized in a pure and naked work, in which each shot has the exact duration and each frame is born from an intimate cinematic need. With echoes of Eric Rohmer as support, a work grows out of the norm, full of emotion, culminating in one of the most emotional outcomes in many years, a final section that elevates the ordinary to the category of capital metaphor.

‘basic instinct’

1660543272 839 Whats on TV today Monday 15 August 2022

primal instinct. USA, 1992 (123 minutes). Directed by Paul Verhoeven. Cast: Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone.

The scandalous film that launched Sharon Stone and gave ephemeral glory to Paul Verhoeven. In reality, Basic Instinct is just a reuse of many of the film noir’s codes that were used more strictly in classic films. It’s an accomplished film, of course, but its main strengths lie in a screenplay that’s adept at relieving tension. It’s also a tricky and tricky work, aided somewhat by the erotic potential of Sharon Stone and the skill of Michael Douglas. The packaging is a bit aggressive in keeping with the times.

USA, 1978 (137 minutes). Directed by Richard Donner. Cast: Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder.

Now that the hero has already been brought to screens in a string of rousing blockbusters, it can be fun to look back and enjoy a body of work that naturally weighs the passage of time. But though the special effects are showing their age and the story exudes naivety, the character’s magic remains intact and luxury veterans like Marlon Brando, Glenn Ford and Trevor Howard impress with authority.

‘Casino’

1660543276 940 Whats on TV today Monday 15 August 2022

United States, 1995 (182 minutes). Director: Martin Scorsese. Cast: Robert de Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, James Woods.

In his last major film of the 1990s, Martin Scorsese returned to the areas covered in One of Ours five years earlier. With the help of a brilliant screenplay by Nicholas Pileggi, Scorsese plunges into the glitz and squalor of Las Vegas to craft a thriller he puts all his energy into. The dazzling staging of Casino, colorful, yes, but also selective, accompanies a tableau of brutal and torn characters in the narrative.
