‘Lawrence of Arabia’

Whats on TV today Tuesday 20 June 2023

USA, 1962 (209 minutes). Directed by David Lean. Cast: Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif.

Lawrence of Arabia deals with the controversial personality of TS Lawrence, the British writer and soldier who united all the Bedouin tribes in the fight against the Turkish invasion. David Lean transforms him into a film hero, thanks to the combination of epic breath and unbridled lyricism, in a work of unusual plastic beauty that combines clear political reflection with a song to adventure and a portrait of existential agony. Lawrence of Arabia is not a film, it is an icon, an untouchable reference.

plain blood. USA, 1984 (90 minutes). Directed by Joel Coen. Cast: Frances McDormand, John Getz, Dan Hedaya.

The Coen brothers’ debut offered an exhibition of both valuable and voluminous visual work that exemplified how the codes of film noir could be reinvented in the 1980s. Easy Blood is a tale of unleashed passion, betrayal, lies and desperate characters, all caught in an inevitable fate. What’s more, the Coens create a poisonous plot that even slips into the horror genre, spiced with surprising dashes of black humor. From the simple starting point of a man hiring a detective to murder his unfaithful wife, the entire footage is an effervescent fantasy frenzy.

“Lolita”

1687235424 398 Whats on TV today Tuesday 20 June 2023

USA-Great Britain 1962 (152 minutes). Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Cast: James Mason, Shelly Winters, Peter Sellers, Sue Lyon.

An intellectual and analytical director like Stanley Kubrick confronts Nabokov’s passionate and fiery universe. The combination results in “Lolita,” a legendary film that turns the tortured Humbert Humbert, the mature professor enslaved by a teenager, into flesh. Much credit goes to Nabokov’s own screenplay; also in a priceless cast that includes James Mason, his eyes burning on the screen, his face filled with sorrow. Delivering an unusually solid staging, Kubrick applies his cynical eye to paint a portrait of the demons that torment people after seemingly ordinary lives.

“Alien, the Eighth Passenger”

1687235426 36 Whats on TV today Tuesday 20 June 2023

Extraterrestrial. USA, 1979 (110 minutes). Director: Ridley Scott. Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto.

Back then, “Alien” was a film that established a chair. It’s still a benchmark today, an exemplary film that breaks new ground in the horror genre. In “Alien” the horror arises from the hint: the clarity only comes about in the last few minutes. A suffocating spaceship, a distant planet and a terrifying alien of which the viewer will never have a complete description are the solid assets played by a Ridley Scott who was still believable as a director. A film that concentrates the sensations to the extreme, reinforced by a memorable staging that evokes cloudy panic explosions.

‘At home’

1687235441 323 Whats on TV today Tuesday 20 June 2023

in the house France, 2011 (105 minutes). Directed by Francois Ozon. Int.: Fabrice Luchini, Ernst Umhauer, Emmanuelle Seigner.

François Ozon develops a penchant for shady stories and ambivalent characters. All of this is true in this film, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and is a free adaptation of a play by Juan Mayorga. A literature teacher, fed up with his students, discovers that one of them displays keen observation in his essays; also that he is obsessed with his partner’s family. Thus begins a story that deals with human misery, the power of seduction and the attraction to voyeurism … In the combination of drama and comedy, the suggestive power of “In the house, crazy and dark” is almost inexhaustible.
