‘Alarm in the Express’
The lady disappears. United Kingdom, 1938 (90 minutes). Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Cast: Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave, Paul Luke, Basil Radford, Cecil Parker.
An intrigue traveling on the back of a train serves as a lesson in narrative elegance and precision for the master Hitchcock. Although Alarm in the Express is much more than that. It is one of the creative pinnacles of the filmmaker’s English stage, in which he has already demonstrated his ability to play with the viewer, assembling suspense exercises into storylines that are in reality more defined by their storytelling than are interesting in themselves. In Alarma en el express there are murders, spies looking for a secret message, ordinary characters who get involved in the intrigues… And of course the teacher’s cruel and cynical sense of humor is also present.

“The Life of Zucchini”
Ma Vie de Zucchini. Switzerland, 2016 (68 minutes). Directed by Claude Barras.
The Swiss Claude Barras is known for a handful of excellent short films shot in the stop-motion technique (filmed frame by frame). His first film captures the drama of some children placed in an orphanage who, thanks to their friendship, find a horizon of happiness and transform themselves into movable puppets with huge eyes, striking with a life of their own. The presence in the screenplay of Céline Sciamma, author of unusual approaches to youth such as Water Lilies, Tomboy and Portrait of a Woman on Fire, increases the emotionality of a compelling story.

“Until His Time Came”
C’era una volta il West. Italy-USA, 1968 (145 minutes). Director: Sergio Leone. Cast: Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson.
It’s mandatory to recognize Sergio Leone’s eagerness to view the western from his own unusual perspectives. It’s also true that his penchant for visual ugliness has severely penalized some of his films. In this case, Leone knows how to infuse the images of Until his time came with intensity to achieve a film with a hectic interior and an electric rhythm, in which a wonderful job by Henry Fonda as the villain shines.

‘Martin (Hache)’
Spain, 1997 (127 minutes). Director: Adolfo Aristaraín. Cast: Federico Luppi, Juan Diego Botto, Cecilia Roth.
Argentinian Adolfo Aristarain delivers an intergenerational drama centered on a troubled teenager surrounded by troubled adults who seem even more like children than he is. Martín (Hache) plunges into a portrait of conflicting generations, and while it works against its will with all-too-obvious archetypes, Aristarain’s courage, the passion with which he films and the mastery with which he directs his performers overwhelm the result.
