‘Criminal Organizations of New York’
United States, 2002 (166 minutes). Director: Martin Scorsese. Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz, Liam Neeson.
After many years in his head, Martin Scorsese pays the definitive tribute to his beloved New York. And with a big budget that, among other things, allowed him to perfectly recreate the atmosphere of the time (1860) and have a great cast. Although the ending falls short of the rest of the film, it is a brilliant study of New York’s historical identity, in which stands out above all and foremost the impressive work of Daniel Day-Lewis, who embroiders the role of The Machiavellian and bloodthirsty gangster leader Bill the Butcher. Incomprehensibly, he didn’t win any of the 10 Oscars he ran for.
