Clint Eastwood travels to the sands of Iwo Jima to stop by the six soldiers who raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi and became heroes thanks to one of history’s most iconic photos. But Eastwood doesn’t want to play hagiography and goes one step further, depicting the use that power later made of these men, going on endless tours to claim to be selling more war bonds. The filmmaker’s succinct gaze creates a work of unusual density, which he completed later that year by moving his camera to the other side, the Japanese army, in The Iwo Jima’s Immense Letters.

Johnny is a young man who lost his limbs and face in a bomb blast. Deaf, dumb and blind, he has become a log that stays alive, locked up in a hospital. Trumbo forces the viewer to accompany him and captures him in gruesome images of unspeakable bitterness.

More was expected of director Brad Anderson after his interesting Session 9 and memorable The Machinist. Transsiberian is a film in which, despite everything, an imaginative and personal director is perceived, who builds up tensions in the first part of the film, only to later dissolve them too laxly. It’s worth enjoying the work of the massive cast.

Pedro Almodóvar visits “Page Two”
The literary space of La 2 interviews Pedro Almódovar, who has just published El último sueño, a compilation of twelve autobiographical short stories written by the filmmaker from the 1970s to the present. El Lobo moves between political reconstruction and intimate drama, although he is more successful in the first area, to which he adds good action sequences alongside the sounds of Deep Purple’s battle-hardened Highway Star, among which the beginning of the film stands out.
