The decades of the 80’s and 90’s will remain as one of the most catastrophic and saddest times in Peru’s history. On Thursday, May 9, 1991, the locker rooms at San Isidro Municipal Stadium were the scene of a tragic episode. soccer player Hector Eduardo Mathey MadronaThe 19-year-old died as a result of the explosion of a home-made bomb that was in the aforementioned sports facility.

On the day of the tragedy, Deportivo Municipal returned to training at the San Isidro Municipal Stadium. The ‘edil’ team, then managed by Ramón Quiroga, was preparing to face Alianza Lima on day 9 of the I Regional Metropolitano. Two days before the unfortunate event, there was a car bomb threat in the San Martin Barracksis in front of the mentioned colossus.

The tragedy

According to the above report, the bombs reached San Isidro Stadium in retaliation. As previously mentioned, there was a bomb threat at San Martín Barracks two days before Mathey’s death. The attack would have been thwarted if the guards of the Sanisidrino colossus had reported it to the police.
Therefore, they decided to take revenge and left homemade bombs in this place. Two more explosive devices were found days after the explosion. The Shining Path issued a statement demarcating responsibility for the attack, but it is not yet known for certain which terrorist group the bomb that killed the mayor belonged to.
