The first time I came across a Nepobaby was in the pages of a fashion magazine. A girl of about 18 was in the field wearing a floral dress and holding a wide-brimmed black hat in her hands. They dedicated two pages to her because she was a designer, actress, DJ, singer and of course model. But above all, she was the daughter of a famous singer and a well-known designer. Soon a multi-page report appeared in a Sunday newspaper in which the daughters of several famous women explained the scents of their childhood. Their mothers (mainly actresses) posed with girls who quickly became fashionable actresses, busy models, designers and, of course, DJs.
This Friday, Lourdes María León (Madonna’s daughter) was invited to Vogue Fashion’s Night Out in Madrid, famous since childhood and being a model, dancer and singer. I assure you that neither Lourdes María nor the girls mentioned above would have ever been more than extras in “The Secret of Puente Viejo” if they had not been daughters of what they are. The Nepobabys cover magazine covers, they get the best roles, they DJ at fashion parties, they go to sets, they perform for major brands and every now and then they release a song. Like all good people, they often say that it took them a lot to get where they are.
The difference between plugged in and nepobaby lies in the degree of success. You can arrive via plug and earn the position. A Nepobaby reaches the top as soon as he says, “Mommy, I want to be an artist.” And it’s the fault of plastic surgery and Instagram that those who don’t have it buy beauty. The rest of us have to swallow his history, his complacency and, from time to time, his incompetence.
