The 2023 regular season begins with Colts running back Jonathan Taylor on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. The designation keeps him out for at least four games.
Then what?
According to multiple reports, Taylor could pass a physical exam and play now. (The Colts could say Taylor could have had a physical weeks ago and that claims of pain in his ankle were aimed at pressure.)
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, trade talks will likely resume once Taylor is able to return. The Packers, who have been exploring a possible trade, are now out. The Dolphins, who have spoken to the Colts about a possible trade, could still be in the mix.
Other teams could join. Injuries might arouse interest. Ultimately, the question is whether the Colts will be reasonable with their demands.
The news that they had asked the Dolphins for a package with receiver Jaylen Waddle suggested the Colts weren’t being sensible. If the Colts don’t view Taylor as someone deserving of a high-end deal, they shouldn’t seek high-end compensation for him.
The other wrinkle is Taylor’s financial expectations. Will someone pay what they want? Will he take less than he wants to get out of Indianapolis?
The Colts could simply opt out until the offseason, tag Taylor and trade him at that point. If that happens, will Taylor play for the Colts this season? If he doesn’t play at all this year, how attractive will he be in 2024?
For now, the action will take place before the Tuesday after Week 8, if at all. That is the deadline for all trades in 2023.
