Maybe not everyone knows, but Italy, as a member of NATO, although it does not have atomic weapons of its own, hosts some on behalf of the United States.. But where is the US arsenal kept? Where are nuclear weapons found? To answer these questions, we must start from the nuclear deterrence sharing pact, which also involves our country.
Pact to share nuclear deterrence: what are the obligations for Italy
O NATO nuclear sharing agreements they guarantee that “the benefits, responsibilities and risks of nuclear deterrence are shared by the Atlantic Alliance and, therefore, also by Italy (which is part of it). The agreements consist of nuclear capabilities, aircraft and infrastructure provided by various members and intended for the collective defense of all.
For this reason, as agreed, the United States has deployed a limited number of B61 nuclear weapons in certain European locations, which remain in the custody and control of the United States in full compliance.
These provisions aim to demonstrate and ensure unity and cohesion among all Allies, who thus share both the political burden and operational risks associated with deterring nuclear weapons.
How many US nuclear bombs are stored in Italy?
we know it in Europe, around 150 American B61 nuclear gravity bombs are deployed in five European countriesor in:
- Belgium;
- Germany;
- Netherlands;
- Peru;
- Italy.
Although governments have never confirmed the presence of nuclear weapons on their territory, various activists especially in Germany and Belgium often mobilize to demand their removal. Officially, therefore, it is not known exactly how many nuclear bombs are kept in Italy on behalf of the United Statesunofficially, some press organs even claimed the presence of about 70 bombs.
In peacetime, nuclear weapons, stored in nonnuclear countries like ours, are guarded by US forces, with a dual code system activated in wartime. One activation code is held by the US president, the other by the host country. The United States, therefore, despite having control over ordinary management, can only resort to the use of nuclear bombs for purposes of war if the host country which holds the other activation code is equally favorable.

Where atomic bombs are kept in Italy: the map
Probably for security reasons, also in where US atomic bombs are kept in Italy we can only count on a map reconstructed from journalistic inquiries.
Among the largest and most important US military bases in Italy is certainly that of Sigonella, in Sicily, but, according to what has been learned, no nuclear weapons would be found there. Twenty of the seventy bombs would be kept in Ghedi, an American base located in the Brescia area. The others, in turn, would be at the airport in Avianan Italian military installation that also houses the US Air Force and NATO forces.
But is there really a risk of nuclear war? Putin, cornered (here the plan to isolate him), has repeatedly threatened the use of the atomic bomb after the invasion of Ukraine, but can he really do it? Here we talk to you about the plan that scares the West and what the real dangers are.
