The music world is currently teeming with bees, such is the enthusiasm for Beyoncé’s new concert film “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé”. The documentary, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the singer’s latest album, Renaissance, and the tour she embarked on in support of it, was released in theaters on December 1st.
The concert film caps a worldwide promotional tour that saw Beyoncé become a news anchor, soar on high-flying glitter horses and ride a tank on stage. Such a monumental tour — which became one of the most lucrative in history — made an upcoming film inevitable, especially since Beyoncé has released six music-related film projects since 2011.
As the world continues to hum lyrics from “Renaissance” some 17 months after its release, the one question on everyone’s lips is: Where can I find “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé”?
Where can I watch “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé”?
After its world premiere on December 1st, Beyoncé’s “Renaissance Tour” film can currently only be seen in cinemas. Beyoncé, like Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” film in October, has signed a distribution deal directly with AMC Theaters – meaning the theaters are still the sole home of her Renaissance film.
This distribution deal proved effective as the film took first place at the box office in the first weekend of December with a debut of $21 million, well within the original projections of $20–25 million. The moviegoing experience was so frenetic that AMC enacted several guidelines during the theatrical release of “Renaissance,” including banning dancing in seats or wearing headgear that might block other fans from watching.
According to AMC, the film will be shown Thursdays through Sundays for at least four weeks, although the theatrical run may vary depending on the country. As for the film’s final destination after its theatrical release, we don’t yet know if “Renaissance” will end up on a streaming service, nor when the official release date will appear.
For comparison, Beyoncé’s two most recent musical films – “Homecoming” and “Black Is King” – premiered exclusively on Netflix and Disney Plus, respectively. This track record shows that the singer isn’t opposed to a streaming release, although “Renaissance” will likely be available to rent initially.
Following Swift’s lead — whose “Eras Tour” was available to rent two months after its theatrical debut — Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” could be available at home in early 2024. This possible release window could mean that “Renaissance” will be available for purchase on platforms such as Vudu, Apple, YouTube or Amazon around 45 days after its theatrical release.
As for streaming, we know that Renaissance will not be available on Max as the project is not a Warner Bros. Discovery project. AMC may license the film to a streamer at some point, but the only sure way to watch the film in the meantime is to go to your local theater.
