“We are concerned that China is using TikTok to collect private information from American citizens,” White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said in a news conference.
“We recognized that the app posed a problem and we are concerned about our national security, which is why we asked Congress to act,” he said of the measure approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee Joe Biden gives power to ban TikTok and other apps.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee has indeed given the green light to the provision giving the President of the United States the power to ban motions. By a vote of 24 in favor and 16 against, lawmakers approved the measure, which gives the Biden administration the opportunity Ban TikTok nationally under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
The measure explicitly names TikTok and allows Biden to impose sanctions, up to and including a ban, if it is found to have voluntarily and knowingly shared user data with people who work for or are under the influence of the Chinese government. The measure is expected to pass the House as a whole, but its fate in the Senate is unclear.
