Chicago White Sox minor league pitcher Anderson Comas publicly came out as gay on Sunday.

The 23-year-old, who started his career as a outfielder, spent last season pitching for the ACL White Sox, the team’s rookie-level affiliate in Phoenix.

“This may be the most personal thing I’ve ever shared and I’m proud and happy to be part of the LGTBQ+ community,” Comas wrote. “I am also a person with a big soul. I’m respectful, I’m a lover, I love my family and friends and that’s what really matters.

“I really enjoy my work. Being a professional baseball player is the best thing that has happened to me, so I just want to say something to these people that says gay people can’t be anyone in this life. Look at me, I’m gay and I’m a pro athlete so that hasn’t stopped me from making my dreams come true. I do that [because] I want to be an inspiration to people like me out there [fighting] for their dreams. Please don’t listen to these stupid things people say about us. Fight for your dreams, believe in yourself and go for it.”

White Sox assistant general manager Chris Getz praised Comas in a statement Sunday afternoon, saying he first came out with the organization last year.

“I was very pleased that he was comfortable in player development to share with us,” said Getz. “I was also pleased with the response across the organization which, as expected, was to support, help and congratulate a teammate. With his social media post today, we are all so proud of Anderson and that he is so open in sharing such an important personal part of his life.”

Comas has spent his entire six-year career in the minor leagues, never playing higher than Single-A level. He spent time as an outfielder until last season. He has 81 RBI and seven homers in 179 career games at the plate.

Comas is the latest professional baseball player to come out as gay. Bryan Ruby did so with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 2021, making him the first active professional baseball player to do so, and San Francisco Giants minor league Solomon Bates followed him last year.
