“Based on the available evidence, the additional global public health risk from JN.1 is currently assessed as low,” the WHO said.

The U.N. health agency said current vaccines continue to protect against severe cases and deaths from the JN.1 variant and other strains of the Covid19 virus.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced this month that the JN.1 subvariant accounted for about 15% to 29% of cases in the United States as of Dec. 8, according to the agency's latest projections.

The agency also said there is no evidence that JN.1 poses a greater public health risk compared to other variants circulating and that an updated vaccine can protect Americans against it.

According to the CDC, the JN.1 strain was discovered in the United States in September. Last week, China identified seven cases of the subvariant.
