New Delhi-. The World Health Organization (WHO) and India will establish a World Center for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar, Gujarat to maximize the potential of this branch through science and technology, it was announced today.
The deal was signed by Ayush Ministry Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghbereyesus at a formal event organized by the world body in Geneva, All India Radio reported.
The WHO said in a statement that the Global Knowledge Center on Traditional Medicines, supported by the Government of India with a $250 million investment, aims to harness the potential of traditional medicines from around the world through science and modern technology to improve people’s health.
Ghebreyesus said that for many millions of people on the planet, traditional medicine is the first port of call for treating many diseases.
Ensuring everyone has access to safe and effective treatment is an essential part of WHO’s mission, he said, and this new center will help harness the power of science to strengthen the evidence base of traditional medicine.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet that the country is honored to host such a state-of-the-art facility that will contribute to better well-being in society and a healthier planet, while harnessing traditional Indian practices to the global good.
