According to their own statements, Egyptian archaeologists discovered an approximately 1,800-year-old “complete city from Roman times” in the center of Luxor. Archaeologists have already unearthed several residential buildings, two towers used to house pigeons and several metalworking workshops complete with tools and Roman copper and bronze coins. “And the excavations continue,” Wasiri said.
Egypt has made a number of spectacular archaeological finds in recent months, most notably in the sprawling necropolis of Saqqara, south of Cairo. Authorities hope to use the findings to boost tourism, which has been at a low point for years. Critics accuse the authorities of preferring spectacular excavations to tedious and less publicly effective research.
