Many humanitarian organizations around the world and more and more countries are calling for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Several analysts and political observers claim that we are witnessing a genocide of the Palestinian people under the culpable laissez-faire attitude of the Western powers.
Israeli bombings of Gaza and abuses by Jewish settlers in the West Bank have reportedly killed thousands of Palestinians, including nearly 4,000 children. Losses on the Palestinian side are four times higher.
It is reasonable to ask whether Israel is defending itself or simply not demanding revenge and not waging a war of aggression to expand its territory.
In this context, QS MP Haroun Bouazzi presented a motion calling for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The application was not approved by the CAQ, which in turn was denied the opportunity to amend it by QS.
Bouazzi cried and insulted the CAQ government. The same applies to the Qsists and our parliamentarians, who have failed to find a wording that would call for a humanitarian ceasefire.
The unbearable
Israel has the right to exist. Palestine too! One day the international community will have to intervene to force the belligerents to share their territory with two states.
It is becoming more and more unbearable to see rescuers in Gaza pulling dead children from the rubble, just as it is more and more unbearable to see the slit throats of small children in the Land of Israel.
The massacres must stop under UN supervision. The cessation of hostilities must open a peace process desired by the CAQ.
It would be a minimum to agree at home on a path to take to contribute to an era of peace in a rather complicated part of the world.
Troubled history
Israel emerged on the territory of a British protectorate after World War II, when there was a mass exodus of Jews from Europe to Palestine. The first Israeli leaders were terrorists like today’s Hamas, who wanted a Palestinian state.
We all too easily forget that Hamas was favored by Israel in the 1980s as a counterweight to Yasser Arafat’s PLO.
It should also be remembered that around 700,000 Palestinians have been expelled from their homes since the founding of the Jewish state. For fifty years, Israel has continued to eat up and illegally occupy territory in the region.
The silence of the Western powers on Zionism is becoming deafening and fueling Palestinian terror without us having any hope of lasting peace.
A request from Quebec to cease hostilities will have little impact, but would allow us to have clear ideas and demonstrate our humanity.
Prime Minister Legault could take the lead.
