POLITICS – At first glance, the image can be challenging. Upon arriving at the G7 Summit this Saturday, May 20, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky landed on the tarmac at Hiroshima Airport in Japan from a plane stamped “French Republic” and our national colors. The same thing happened the day before, when the Ukrainian leader flew on the same plane to the Arab League summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

A Twitter account specializing in monitoring the official aviation of the French Republic has also followed the movement of the plane used by the President of Ukraine, while providing some additional information. Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew in a Military Air Transport Command (COTAM) Airbus A330-243, which is managed by the Air Force and is comparable (at least in format) to the plane Emmanuel Macron uses for his international travels.

A stopover in Poland
Departure from Villacoublay in France, the plane Stopover in Poland, from where the journey of the President of Ukraine began. With Europe 1, an Elysian source confirms that France has made this plane available to the Ukrainian head of state. The reason ? “Show of confidence between France and Ukraine”, ie the confirmation of the tireless diplomatic support that Paris has given Kiev. The radio confirms that this initiative was decided during Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Paris last week. According to Le Parisien, it was Ukraine that wanted to present its point of view at the Arab League and G7 summits and had made the request.
Aside from this desire to support Kiev, Volodymyr Zelensky’s leadership is not lacking in pure security considerations. Being owned by the French Air Force, the plane offers its passenger immunity, as it is difficult to imagine a foreign power shooting down the official plane of a nuclear-armed country that is also a member of NATO. A casus belli that would steer the Ukraine conflict into far more serious dimensions.
Note that this is not the first time that the President of Ukraine has traveled under French protection. On Sunday, May 14, Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew from Germany on the Falcon 7X, which is normally reserved for trips by the President of the Republic. What we could also see in the pictures his arrival at Villacoublay.
