As expected, Wilfried Nancy is in the running for the Sigi Schmid Trophy as Head Coach of the Year. He meets Los Angeles FC’s Steve Cherundolo and Philadelphia Union’s Jim Curtin.
Nancy’s appointment comes as no surprise. After all, he led his team to second place in the Eastern Conference with the club’s best season in MLS history, with the team finishing with a record of 20-9-5 and 65 points, just two fewer than first-placed Union.
Kei Kamara is in the running for two awards. He is nominated for Comeback of the Year and Player with Best Humanitarian Achievement.
The 38-year-old veteran, who quickly became a fan favourite, has long dreamed of playing in Montreal and proved it by scoring 9 goals and 7 assists in 32 games, half of them as a substitute.
Romell at his best
Coming back to the honors at CF Montreal, there could have been multiple winners for each of the three available trophies.
Romell Quioto passed Victor Wanyama and Djordje Mihailovic for MVP.
The injury that slowed Mihailovic down in the second half of the season may have cost him the title, but we have to admit that it’s fully deserved for Quioto, who has amassed 15 goals and 6 assists in 30 games.
“There’s no denying that this is my best season of my career,” he said through an interpreter.
collective
Alistair Johnston won the defensive player title ahead of Wanyama and Joel Waterman.
“It’s good that people voted for me, but anyone in the defensive squad and even Sam Piette could have won that award. It’s a trophy that goes to the collective,” said the Canadian backer.
“I’m most satisfied with our defensive development over the season, it’s day and night. We’re going into the playoffs with confidence. »
Johnston had 4 goals and 5 assists in 33 games in his first season at Montreal.
“Adapting has been difficult, but it shows that if you stick to your principles, things will evolve. Somehow I had to forget how I had previously learned to play. »
