Will Cecilio Waterman make it? This is what happened to the Panamanian strikers who played in Peru

The flag of Panama will fly in Matute in 2024. With the arrival of Cecilio Waterman Lima Alliance He exhausted his penultimate quota of foreign players in the hope of assembling a team that would allow him to compete for Liga 1 and play a good role in the Copa Libertadores. The Canalero “9”, who has just become runner-up with Cobresal in Chile, will have to remember his best goalscoring times in order to present himself as an interesting option in the blue and white offensive for coach Alejandro Restrepo.

“Aquaman” is not the first Panamanian striker to come to Peruvian football to play for a big club. Some of his compatriots have already “broken it” and left a beautiful memory, but others have escaped without pain or glory, a fate that the intimate footballer will try to avoid.

Which Panamanian strikers played in Peru?

These are the Central American country's best-known artillerymen who have been traveling through Peru in recent years. Strangely, none of them had worn the Alianza Lima shirt before.

  • Luis Tejada (Juan Aurich, Universitario, César Vallejo, Sport Boys, Pirata FC)
  • Abdiel Arroyo (Cesar Vallejo)
  • Rolando Blackburn (Sporting Cristal)
  • Jose Fajardo (Cusco FC)
  • Jorman Aguilar (Sport Boys).

Of the five mentioned above, Tejada was undoubtedly the most notable. Between 2010 and 2019, “Pana” got tired of busting networks, especially with Aurich, although it also ran “compliant” campaigns with Vallejo and “U”. In the 329 games he played for Peruvian clubs, the popular “Golden Tooth” scored 155 goals, provided 59 assists and became national champion once (2011).

Fajardo recorded more modest, although not insignificant, numbers in the two seasons he spent in Cusco (2022 and 2023). In League 1 and League 2, the “Pantera” played 37 games and scored 20 goals before making it to the MLS in the United States. He also won a second division title.

Arroyo, Blackburn and Aguilar, on the other hand, represent the other side of the coin. The first only scored two goals in 28 duels with Vallejo in 2021, the second barely scored four goals in 13 games with Cristal in 2017 and the third only celebrated once in 7 games with the Boys in 2021.
