“Will & Grace” star Eric McCormack’s wife, Janet Leigh Holden, filed for divorce after 26 years of marriage.
Holden cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY that were filed Nov. 22 in Los Angeles County Superior Court. No date of separation was listed.
McCormack’s wife is seeking spousal support and has also asked the court to revoke the actor’s right to spousal support.
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for McCormack and Holden for comment.
The couple married in August 1997 and have one child together, 21-year-old son Finnigan Holden McCormack.
The former couple met in 1994 on the set of the CBS TV series “Lonesome Dove.” McCormack portrayed Col. Francis Clay Mosby and Holden worked as an assistant director on the series.
In an essay for The Guardian in 2007, McCormack revealed that Holden was initially reluctant to date him for professional reasons.
“I met my wife Janet on the set of a television series in 1994. She was the assistant director. I had just gotten out of a relationship and I couldn’t be trusted,” he wrote. “I’ve dated actresses, but Janet was different. She wore jeans and drove a pickup truck.”
He continued: “At first she wasn’t too keen. She knew that acting was a lot of work: it would be like taking your work home with you. But I managed to convince her.”
“We had a secret affair in the first season,” McCormack said of the beginning of their relationship. “It was actually much worse for her because she wasn’t supposed to favor any of the actors.”

He later praised Holden for keeping him grounded in the early days of his fame.
“I think I was very lucky that I didn’t become known until I was in my early thirties. If this had happened when I was younger, I might have been seen falling out of nightclubs,” the actor wrote. “I think I acted like a much better person because I was already married when all this happened (I got married five months after I got the role as Will). Every now and then I wish I had had those crazy parties, but I would have been afraid of ending up as a 29-year-old.”
