For the medical part, we enlisted the advice of cardiac surgeon Guglielmo Actis Dato (son of Angelo Actis Dato, one of the pioneers of cardiac surgery who inspired the series, editor’s note).
How was this advice actually implemented?
Guglielmo Actis Dato accompanied us by the hand, together we selected the interventions and then simplified them. He also went on set to show the actors how to move and how to pass the instruments, because there is a liturgy that we try to respect as much as possible. Because of his extensive experience in the operating room, he tried to imagine how it could work not with the current protocols but with the instruments of the time. He is always very helpful.
Were you inspired by real events for the vertical falls?
Some are real interventions, others are inferences where we referred to cases that were consistent with the theme told in a particular episode. The story of the first Italian pacemaker is also true. Additionally, Helmut’s story is inspired by the story of Hamilton Naki, Professor Christiaan Barnard’s assistant. Naki was not allowed into the operating room in apartheid South Africa because he was black. Based on his story, Helmut was born, a boy who came from East Berlin during those terrible years.

Delia had questioned everything at the end of the first season and we couldn’t pretend that Alberto wasn’t expecting a child with Karen or say, “It doesn’t matter, I don’t love you anyway.” We respected the standards of the time and Alberto’s personality . He is an overly responsible man who always feels the weight of the world on his shoulders. The thought of him leaving a child behind was unthinkable. So we assumed that they should be separated. However, the most difficult challenge was different.

It was difficult to deal with Delia and not portray her as the woman who wanted to undermine the newly formed family unit. We managed to maintain balance because all sorts of things happen to this poor thing. Apart from the moment of fragility that her mother brings when she throws herself into Alberto’s arms, she always tries to keep her distance. She’s not one to interfere. In order to forget Alberto, she even tries to start a new life with a man she is not in love with.
