The aftermath of Will Smith’s slap continues to be a rocky road. Smith has apologized multiple times for his actions: one on stage while accepting his Oscar win, one afterward at Chris Rock, and finally one where he resigned from the academy. Despite his apology, however, action continues to be taken by organizations that work closely with Smith. After resigning from his membership with the Academy, SAG-AFTRA announced that they have been in touch with the Academy and ABC to “appropriately” address the situation within their own membership. The conflicting reactions to Academy of Smith’s actions and the reactions that night also brought to light issues within the Oscars organization and how they might respond to future events. Rock, whom Smith slapped after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, addressed the slap just before a comedy show but said he would address “eventually” the night and Smith over time. While the future of Smith’s career remains uncertain immediately after this weekend, below are some glimpses of his projects currently in development.
reported that Netflix allegedly “slowed down” development on Smith’s Fast and Loose. Several factors may have contributed to the decision; Associate director David Leitch reportedly pulled out of the project a week before the Oscars to work on Ryan Gosling’s Fall Guy. With no director attached and after the slap, THR said Netflix has reportedly put the project on hold. THR also reported that Bad Boys 4 was allegedly put on hold following the events of Sunday’s ceremony, although Smith received 40 pages of the script before the slap. Smith’s Apple TV+ drama Emancipation is currently in post-production and is set to premiere sometime in 2022. However, Apple has not announced an official release date.
