THE ODD ORIGIN OF WILLIAM LEVY’S LAST NAME
The Cuban actor’s surname Levy does not belong to his father but to his mother Barbara. According to the MDZ portal, he is of Jewish origin.
William Levy was born in Cojímar, municipality of Habana del Este in the province of Havana. His maternal grandfather was an Ashkenazi Jew who had to separate from his own family when he married a non-Jewish Cuban; In an interview, he said he grew up in a non-religious family environment.
Abandoned by their father at an early age, he and his siblings (Jonathan and Barbara) grew up in the care of their mother and family. Shortly before his fifteenth birthday, he legally emigrated to the United States because his stepfather was granted political asylum and was able to get his family out of Cuba.
William Levy studied acting in Miami, Los Angeles and Mexico City. He was an excellent baseball player in high school, which earned him a scholarship to attend college.
He then began his studies in business administration, which he interrupted after two years to enter the entertainment industry.
