Yikes…when this is all more than an abundance of caution, it becomes a bit of a nightmare.
With runners in first and second place in the bottom of the 8th inning tonight, Willson Contreras was hit in his front (left) ankle by a pitch. He scrambled to first base quickly as if his hair was on fire (adrenaline is wild) but he was clearly in pain.
Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning. Was in visible pain trotting down to 1B and during the pitching change he was sitting on the floor when checked by the coaches.
Now comes out of the game with Ortega Pinch-Running.

David Ross went out to check on him and Contreras was knocked out of the game. No news yet on the severity of the injury (in my view it seemed higher up the leg than the ankle which could be a good thing but obviously hard to tell). Keep your fingers crossed. I don’t need to tell you how important Willson Contreras is to this team, not just this season, but (in one way or another) seasons to come.
More information will come when we have it.
UPDATE: Good news for starters as the x-rays on Contreras’ ankle were negative.

Update II: More good news. As I suspected, the ball hit Contreras above the ankle where it’s a bit meatier. He will sit out tomorrow as planned and expects to rejoin the team for the double headers on Saturday. As a precaution, players tend to be too optimistic on the night of an injury before the swelling/pain sets in, so we’ll high-five on tomorrow for an update. BUT THAT is as good as it could have been so far.
Contreras: “Fortunately, it hit me above the ankle. I have a bruised bone, but nothing major. I’m looking forward to being back in the line-up not tomorrow, but the next day. I had tomorrow off anyway.”
