Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames was forced out of Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants after being hit by a line-drive foulball in the dugout. The game was suspended for several minutes while coaches and doctors tended to Adames. Eventually he was helped to the clubhouse and taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
The ball hit Adames in the side of the head, and after the game, Brewers manager Craig Counsell told reporters that Adames was “alert and responsive the entire time.” per MLB.com. He has no fractures and will remain in hospital overnight so his condition can be monitored. Adames will be placed on the injured list on Saturday with a concussion. according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The line drive was hit by Brewer’s utility man Brian Anderson in the second inning. Anderson was very emotional on the pitch when Adames was helped with the dugout and he went straight to the clubhouse to check on his teammate after being down to complete his shot. Here’s what happened:
Adames was replaced at shortstop after the inning by rookie Brice Turang. Turang, the club’s regular second baseman, is the most likely candidate to fill in at short notice while Adames is on the injured list.
Adames, 27, came on Friday with a .205/.289/.384 batting streak and nine homers this season. He played in all 51 of Milwaukee’s games. The Brewers acquired Adames in a deal that sent Drew Rasmussen to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021. He is slated to become a free agent after the 2024 season.
Despite Friday’s overwhelming loss (MIL 15, SF 1), the Brewers remain 27-24 in first place in the NL Central.
