Hoping to secure a place in the main draw of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, Quebec’s Gabriel Diallo got off to a good start in qualifying on Monday with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Turkey’s Cem Ilkel.

It took the winner 1 hour and 52 minutes to defeat his 27-year-old rival at No. 226 in the world. Diallo hit 14 aces during the duel and had four breaks from nine chances. He dominated the winners 46 to 22.
The 140th racket on the ATP track will be measured against Italy’s Matteo Gigante (254th) in the second qualifying round. The third leg of the season’s Grand Slam begins on July 3rd.
The Canadian Vasek Pospisil was eliminated early in the pre-tournament phase and lost 6:2, 7:6 (7) against the Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves.
