Wimbledon: For Gabriel Diallo it will be the next time

Quebec’s Gabriel Diallo saw his hopes of a place in the main draw of Wednesday’s Wimbledon tennis tournament dashed when he suffered a 6-4 straight-set defeat by Italy’s Matteo Gigante in the second qualifying round.

For the 21-year-old athlete and 29th seed in the pre-tournament phase, it’s the end of an arduous journey at the All England Club. In the first round, he needed three sets to defeat Turkey’s Cem Ilkel, the 226th ATP player. This time Diallo stumbled in front of the 254th pro racquet, albeit the same age as him.

In the defeat, the Maple Leaf player and world number 140 holder hit 11 aces. However, he conceded three breaks and committed 29 unforced errors during the 1:27 game.

The duels in the main draw begin on Monday.
