In a few weeks, Microsoft plans to release a new Windows 11 feature update, 23H2. The company does not give an exact date, but the appointment is expected to take place before the end of October 2023.
According to Microsoft, this new feature update will be installed quickly on devices running Windows 11 22H2. However, the process takes longer if PCs are still running the first version of the operating system. The latter will be retiring shortly. The affected PCs will then be automatically migrated to 22H2.
Several new features and improvements are planned for Windows 11 23H2. It’s important to note that Redmond may decide to make adjustments before the launch date if any last-minute issues arise.
Windows 11 23H2, three big new features
One of the most notable developments will be the launch of Copilot, an AI assistant. The idea is to make the operating system more user-friendly and intelligent. You shouldn’t expect miracles right away. The interactions are limited to a few commands, e.g. B. asking to take a screenshot or switching to dark mode. However, the system should improve and enrich over time.
Windows 11 is being expanded with a new backup application. It is intended to enable the easy integration of new content on OneDrive. This affects specific folders, settings and customizations. Be careful, this is not a tool that can withstand a dedicated utility. For example, it is not possible to back up entire drives or support a custom selection of folders.
The File Explorer interface will evolve with a change in the location of the address and toolbar to offer an environment similar to that of an Internet browser. The Gallery module handles images and photos with an approach similar to the chronological display mode of the Photos application. A larger thumbnail and a new sharing option appear in the information pane.
Minor new features and improvements
These new features also add support for new compression formats other than ZIP. These include RAR, 7Z or even GZ.
The volume mixer should offer volume control via app. An option to unlink it from the taskbar should bring it back. This separation of different instances of the same application makes it easier to access each one instantly.
The settings are expanded to include a separate homepage. It offers certain settings and customization options.
Hovering over recently used files in the Start menu displays a thumbnail and the file path. The label “System” appears next to system apps.
Paint will finally support dark mode and Cortana will no longer be available.
Windows 11 23H2 comes in the form of an “activation package”. This solution is known because it has already been used several times under Windows 10. Jason Leznek, Microsoft employee, confirmed that Windows 11 23H2 will be offered in the fourth quarter of this year. Administrators can then deploy it through various distribution channels. We can name Windows Server Update Services, Windows Update for Business or Windows Autopatch.
On our side (consumers), the update is provided via the Windows Update service. It is possible that it will be offered as an option in a first phase. In this case the download and installation will not be automatic. You have to intervene manually in Windows Update.
