An earthquake registered in Nepal killed at least 128 people and injured dozens on Friday (3). This is the country’s deadliest earthquake since 2015, when 9,000 people died after two earthquakes were recorded within days.
Friday’s quake was felt around 11:47 p.m. local time (3:02 p.m. in Brasília). Nepal’s National Seismological Center said the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4.
Authorities reported that the death toll could rise in the coming hours as there were difficulties in communication in mountainous areas near the quake’s epicenter, in Jajarkot district.
Harish Chandra Sharma, a government official, told Portal that the number of injured could reach hundreds as the district is home to 190,000 people.
“Many houses collapsed, many others developed cracks. Thousands of residents spent the entire night in cold open areas because they were too afraid to enter the cracked houses,” said Sharma.
Police are working to clear roads blocked by landslides and expedite assistance to victims. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal also traveled to the region.
