Late Sunday afternoon, about 200 Republicans gathered in a small hall in the southern city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to support farright gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano and his “restoration of liberty” campaign.
Consistently sporting hats that read “MAGA Make America Great Again,” Donald Trump’s iconic campaign slogan that means “Make America Great Again,” Republicans sharply criticized current President Joe Biden, accusing him of “leaving the country.” “. open borders” and “sink the country”.
On Lusa, Michael, a fish market worker, went further, accusing the Democratic government of trying to “impose a new world order in the United States” and “destroy Western civilization.”
“The communists, the liberals, they want to destroy western civilization. They want one world religion and one world government. They want to control our lives America as a country,” he said.
Weaving harsh assessments from the “traditional press,” which “just lies,” the 53yearold reiterated Republican claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen by Trump and said he’s confident the former head of state will return to the white House in 2024 and rid the United States of this “New World Order, Communism and Marxism”.
“We just have to go to the polls and vote millions because they, the democratic side, are faking the elections. If we go to the millions and vote, there’s no way they can change that. We have to choose. That is the point. But they want to introduce communism here in the United States, it’s happening now. And a lot of people don’t know that. A lot of people closed their eyes,” he claimed.
When asked by Lusa if he supported the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol in which Trump supporters tried to prevent Joe Biden from being certified as elected, Michael said he “didn’t pay much attention to the episode.” , advocated this, but none of the intruders were armed and the only person who died in the attack was “an unarmed supporter of Donald Trump”.
However, these statements are not true. Not only were five people killed and more than 140 police officers injured on the day of the attack, but court documents indicate many of the intruders were armed.
For Susan, a 56yearold project manager, Tuesday’s midterm elections are “absolutely critical” and the United States must “become a constitutional republic again.”
“We need electoral integrity. We need to be energy independent again. We need to boost our economy, we need jobs here in Pennsylvania,” he argued.
Amid criticism of the Democrats, Republicans called a priest onto the stage and said two prayers in unison to “lead Doug Mastriano to victory.”
One of the most Trumpfriendly candidates in this election, Mastriano advocates a total abortion ban, more oil and natural gas exploration, and a full overhaul of electoral laws.
One of the organizers of the event who asked not to be named told Lusa that those 200 or so people were there to try to “restore freedom in Pennsylvania.”
“Our freedom is at stake. The freedom to choose how our children are raised and the freedom to live our lives as we see fit,” he said.
Another Republican who was present at the event and declined to be named said the streets of Philadelphia have become a “war zone” due to the rise in crime, something that “has continued for years under this regime.”
“The labor movement, the builders, have lost millions of dollars since Biden took office. But the unions continue to support him. But not me!” he concluded.
Charles Gerow, a Republican political strategist and CEO of Quantum Communications, a Pennsylvaniabased public relations firm, was one of the speakers at the event on behalf of Mastriano and said this election was “vital.”
“It is freedom that goes to the elections. We are the last defenders of freedom. Take to the streets, knock on doors, do what you have to do to give Doug Mastriano the win,” he urged.
Tuesday’s midterm elections will determine which party will control Congress for the final two years of Biden’s tenure, with 36 state governments and several local referenda on key issues like abortion and soft drugs at stake.
Up for grabs are all 435 seats in the House of Representatives (lower house of Congress), where Democrats currently hold a narrow fiveseat majority, and 35 seats in the Senate, where Democrats only hold a majority thanks to a runoff .US President Kamala Harris.
Elections could not only change the face of the US Congress, but also bring proTrump governors and local officials to power.
A very heavy loss in the upcoming election could further complicate the scenario of a second presidential term for Joe Biden.
