Wolves killed four Lipizzaner foals at a stud farm near Rome

Measures against the increase in the wolf population are being demanded.

Four Lipizzaner foals were attacked and killed by wolves at a stud farm near Rome. The CREA team intervened and chased away two wolves while a third had already escaped. A two-month-old foal was attacked, while three others collapsed and died after the attack. Until now, the farm had never been attacked by a predator.

“Only last Sunday, in Lipizza (Slovenia), eight European countries celebrated the inscription of the ‘Lipizzaner Creation Tradition’ on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 2, 2022”, emphasized Luca Buttazzoni, Director of the CREA and UNESCO representative for Lipizzaner horses in Italy.

He called for measures to be taken against the rapidly increasing wolf population in the area. They would never have ventured so close to the houses. Lipizzaners were named after a stud farm in what is now Slovenia, but gained worldwide fame as imperial court horses in Vienna.

The experience of the Apennine region of Abruzzo also shows that living with large carnivores in central Italy is not always easy. Nine wolves were found dead by rangers last week in the province of L’Aquila, not far from the Abruzzo National Park. The animals would have been killed with pieces of poisoned meat found in the region’s forests. As confirmed by the national park, an entire pack of wolves living in the area was wiped out within a week. The causes of death are now being examined by experts.
