Woman believed dead found alive in coffin at funeral in Ecuador – CNN

CNN –

A 76-year-old woman, who was pronounced dead at a hospital in Ecuador, was found alive tapping on her coffin at her wake in the town of Babahoyo.

“I picked up the coffin and her heart was racing and her left hand was banging on the coffin… We called 911 to get her here to the hospital,” her son Gilberto Barbera said in a video posted to social media.

The video showed people waiting and supporting Montoya as emergency services arrived at the scene and took the 76-year-old woman back to the hospital.

According to the Ministry of Health, a state investigation is currently underway.

The woman was said to have been hospitalized on Friday with a possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest, and after failing to respond to resuscitation protocol, a doctor on duty pronounced her dead.

The video also shows their hospital signs and then their son requesting an ambulance to arrive.

The woman’s full name is widely reported to be Bella Yolanda Montoya Castro, which matches the initials “BYMC” used in Sunday’s statement by the Ecuadorian Health Ministry.

It said Montoya was in the intensive care unit at Martín Icaza Hospital in Babahoyo – the same facility where she was originally pronounced dead. Her current condition is unknown.

CNN’s calls to the hospital for comment went unanswered.

The man who took the video later asked the woman’s name, to which someone in the room replied, “Bella Yolanda.”

The ministry went on to say that a national technical committee was formed in coordination with the Health Services Quality Assurance Agency “to initiate a medical review to establish responsibilities for the alleged confirmation of death.”
