A 50yearold woman has died after spending nine years with a calcified fetus in her abdomen.. The 50yearold Congolese lived as a refugee in the United States and complained of indigestion and stomach cramps when he was admitted to a hospital.
After testing at the medical facility, a 28weekold fetus was found to be stuck in the lower abdomen and pressing on the intestines. This situation is known as lithopedion.
According to The Sun, she was offered surgery but claimed she “didn’t have the heart” for it.
The Journal of Medical Case Reports reported that the woman claimed to have been the victim of a spell cast by someone in Tanzania.. She said she lost her baby nine years ago and that she was accused by health professionals in the refugee camp of killing her son for drug use.
Deciding not to have surgery, the woman died 14 months after treatment because the fetus prevented the intestines from absorbing vital nutrients. Before, She stated that she does not fear death and that she is “ready”..
A study published by the Royal Society of Medicine indicates that there are 290 documented cases of lithopedion in the world literature. The oldest case is from a French woman in 1582 who carried the fetus with her for 28 years. (With information from UOL)
