A woman had her arms and legs immediately amputated after eating tilapia in August this year. The surgery was performed on September 13 to prevent the spread of infection.
According to Metrópoles, 40yearold American Laura Barajas was infected with the Vibrio vulnificus bacterium, which is found in marine animals. However, in rare cases it can also affect shallow river fish such as tilapia.

The fish she ate was undercooked, which resulted in a very serious infection. The publication states that the pathogen is usually eliminated during each cooking or freezing process.
However, serious complications can occur when ingested by humans, as in the case of Laura Barajas.
The American, who had all four limbs amputated at once on September 13, had to undergo this tragic procedure to prevent the spread of infection.
“She [bactéria] can cause fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. In severe cases, a generalized infection can occur and, in 60% of cases, injuries to the extremities of the body,” says the Foodborne Diseases Manual of the São Paulo Health Department.
According to the publication, the bacteria have implanted themselves in Laura’s body. Because he did not respond to standard treatment, his limbs had to be amputated. She had a generalized infection and her kidneys were failing.
Laura’s family, who have already spent their entire savings on her treatment, are trying to raise money to help the American through the GoFound Me campaign. Laura was reportedly infected at a local market in San Jose, California, USA.
