A night of drinking ended badly for 36yearold Canadian Julia Anderson. After leaving a bar, the woman went home drunk and slept in what she described as an “awkward” position with her legs drawn up. When she woke up the next morning, she found that she could not move her lower limbs.

The Canadian was cut off from circulation, her legs swelled and doubled in size overnight. “All I could think was, ‘Did I break my legs or something? Why can’t I move my legs?’” she told British newspaper The Mirror in an interview.

Julia’s mother called the hospital to take her daughter to the emergency room. Several rounds of tests and Xrays were taken at the scene, and doctors told her that as she lay on her legs all night, there was a blockage in blood flow, which developed compartment syndrome as a result of the disruption in circulation.

According to the MSD Manual, the comprehensive source of medical information covering thousands of medical topics, “compartment syndrome” is increased tissue pressure within a narrow fascial compartment, resulting in tissue ischemia. The first symptom is an exaggerated pain proportional to the degree of injury.”

The moment happened three years ago, in 2020, but the Canadian recently decided to share the story on Facebook so others don’t make the same mistake.

In the post, Julia says she has had three operations on one of her legs. “The muscle was deteriorating so quickly that it was releasing toxins into my blood, so I was also on kidney dialysis and had blood transfusions. I was in the hospital for five weeks and two of those weeks in intensive care,” she explains in the Post.

In addition to the operations, acute pain and nerve damage occurred several times, which she could only withstand with medication.

“The nerve pain was so bad, despite a constant high dose of painkillers. I cried in my sleep and screamed at random when the constant pain became acute,” Julia wrote.

Almost three years later, the Canadian is still suffering from some of the aftereffects in her legs, especially when walking.

Julia Anderson completes the post and talks about the risks of being drunk: “If you drink too much, try to stay sober before bed as much as possible!”.
