33yearold English woman Megan Royle was diagnosed with skin cancer, underwent treatment for two years that included immunotherapy and surgery, and later discovered that she had never suffered from the disease. The British press reported on the case this week after Megan reached an outofcourt settlement to compensate her for the inconvenience.

It all started in 2019 when the theater makeup artist was diagnosed. Megan underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tissue and then had to undergo nine cycles of immunotherapy, which affected her fertility. That’s why she had her eggs frozen until she was released in 2021.

During the pandemic, she looked for another hospital. There, a medical board reviewed her examinations and determined that she had been misdiagnosed and had never had cancer.

“You just can’t believe something like this could happen and to this day I have no explanation as to how or why it happened. I thought I had cancer for two years, went through all the treatment and then I was told. “There was no cancer at all,” Royle told the BBC.

The news that she had never had cancer surprised her, “it took me a while to understand it. You would think the immediate feeling would be relief, and in some ways it was but I would say the bigger feelings were frustration and anger.”

A spokesman for the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation, which is responsible for the hospital where the makeup artist was treated, also publicly apologized: “We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to Megan Royle for the distress caused by her experience.”
