The woman who shot and killed her husband Saturday (Feb. 21) at a hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he was hospitalized in a terminal condition, told police she complied with his request and that the plan included to commit suicide to the local press this Sunday (22).
Police identified the woman as Ellen Gilland, 76, and her husband as Jerry Gilland, 77.
“Because he was terminally ill, they talked about three weeks ago and planned what to do,” Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said, according to TV stations in that city on Florida’s east coast.
Ellen Gilland was arrested as soon as she left her husband’s room at AdventHealth Hospital, where she barricaded herself after shooting him and did not leave for about three hours, police said.
Young said the woman was arrested for murder but prosecutors will have jurisdiction to report her.
According to a police statement released on Saturday, when Jerry Gilland’s death was confirmed, negotiators were sent to the hospital to persuade the gunman to leave the room and turn himself in.
At the time, police told people not to go near the site, and the AdventHealth Hospital area was evacuated to protect staff and patients.
According to Young, this terminally ill area on the 11th floor of the hospital has most of the patients on ventilators, making evacuation very difficult.
According to Daytona Beach Channel 9, it is still unclear how Ellen Gilland managed to escape hospital controls and enter the medical center with a gun.
