After making it to Minneapolis for the Final Four, South Carolina, UConn and Stanford are the only teams still in contention for a national championship.
South Carolina, the AP’s No. 1 wire-to-wire team, opened the Final Four at Target Center against No. 1 seed Louisville. The matchup was a true battle of the giants as both teams entered the competition having won all but one of their tournament matches by double digits. The Gamecocks prevailed 72-59 and achieved their second national championship in the last five years.
The national championship matchup will be scheduled after UConn and Stanford play at 9:30 p.m. Stanford, the reigning national champions, face a UConn side set to clinch an exciting 91-87 double overtime win over No. 1-seeded NC State.
Here’s a background to every Final Four matchup.
- Three days after winning Naismith’s Player of the Year award, Aliyah Boston showed exactly why she deserved the honor with her 72-59 win over Louisville. Despite doubles and triples, Boston led South Carolina with 23 points, along with 18 rebounds and four assists. South Carolina now has a chance to win its first national title since 2017. Louisville’s Emily Engstler had 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals in a masterful loss.
After missing 19 games this season with a knee injury, UConn star Paige Bueckers returned to her Naismith Player of the Year form by scoring 27 points – on a 10-of-15 shoot-out – in an exciting one-two in overtime against NC State in the Elite Eight. Next up for the Buckers and UConn is a Stanford team that controlled the color against Texas in the Elite Eight, blocked 11 shots and passed the Longhorns on 17 in a 59-50 win. The Cardinals are two wins away from becoming only the fourth women’s program to win back-to-back NCAA Division I tournaments.
