Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship: Canadians fail in the final

The United States capitalized on Canada’s indiscipline late in the third period to win the gold medal 6-3 at the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships Sunday night in Brampton, Ontario.

Around four minutes before the end, the Americans used a double power play to take the lead. It was captain Hilary Knight who scored the winning goal, earning her 100th career point in the prestigious competition.

Moments later, Knight completed her hat trick to finally shatter the hopes of the Canadians and the many fans in attendance at the CAA Center.

Early in the third period, Caroline Harvey leveled the game with a shot from the point. Abbey Murphy and Cayla Barnes (empty net) were the other scorers for the winners.

In the Canadian camp, Marie-Philip Poulin from Quebec was again awarded. The Canada captain scored her first goal and also provided an assist in one of Brianne Jenner’s two wins.

The latter scored twice in the second half, adding to his involvement in Poulin’s net in the first half.

Because of this win, the United States won a first World Championship gold medal since the 2019 edition of the competition. It was also the 10th triumph for the Americans on 22 occasions. The Canadians also met their arch-rivals in the final for the 21st time.

Czech Republic in bronze

Earlier in the day, the Czech Republic defeated Switzerland 3-2 to take the bronze medal.

This is the second year in a row that the Czechs climbed to the third step of the podium at the World Championships.

Striker Denisa Krizova was the big star of the duel against the Swiss formation. The 28-year-old scored two goals, including the winner, and set up Michaela Pejzlova’s pass.

Lara Stalder and Marie Lena Lutz provided the answer for Switzerland, who fired just 13 shots at Blanka Skodova’s net. At the other end of the ice rink, Andrea Brändli had to face 33 strokes.
