It took the 26-year-old Quebecer some time to persuade national team management to trust her. She finally made her debut in the red and white jersey at the 2021 SheBelieves Cup.

She was later selected for the Tokyo Olympics, where she won the gold medal. So the patience will have paid off.

“I think I developed a bit late. When I went to the United States, it was in the NCAA that the blockade was lifted. It doesn’t really bother me, I’m trusted, and that’s what counts,” said the NCAA-wearing University of South Florida Bulls colors.

Goals galore

In Tokyo, Viens was limited to a backup role with 61 minutes played in two games.

Still, she’s a goalscorer, and she proved that in South Florida by becoming the college’s all-time leading scorer and being named to her conference’s All-Star team in her four years at USF. After that, she scored 73 goals.

Viens is a hit in the Swedish Premier League, where she wears the colors of Kristianstads DFF.

In 2022, she won the top scorer championship with 21 goals and 10 assists in just 26 games.

She has had another successful season this year and is currently second with 12 goals and 5 assists in 17 games.

game time

For Évelyne Viens, it’s all about playtime. Give her something with the national team and she will score.

“In Sweden I have a lot of playing time, I score goals and I have a good coaching staff there. I was able to develop further in several aspects. The coach trusts me and helps me in many things that develop my game for the national team.

When asked how she can help the Canadian team, the answer is obvious.

“The simple answer as a striker is to score goals. I don’t know yet what my role will be. Of course, attackers must always be ready. esp [Priestman, l’entraîneuse] We made a lot of offensive changes, so we always have to be ready.”
