(Los Angeles) The fantasy film “Wonka,” about the famous chocolatier of the same name, has returned to the top of the North American box office for the third time in theaters, according to estimates released Sunday by specialty firm Exhibitor Relations.
Published yesterday at 3:53 p.m.
Helmed by star actor Timothée Chalamet, the film, which also had a strong start abroad, grossed nearly $24 million in the US and Canada between Friday and Sunday, with the holiday expected to increase to $31 million. According to projections, it will be $8 million on Monday.
In this feature film from Warner Bros. Studios, Timothée Chalamet plays the exuberant character Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in his early days as a chocolatier.
Surrounded in particular by Hugh Grant, surprisingly as Oompa Loompa, and Rowan Atkinson, he brilliantly succeeds in interpreting Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp.
The film has already grossed more than $142 million in the United States and Canada and $244 million worldwide since its release.
In second place for the weekend was “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” another feature film from Warner Bros. with $19.5 million.

The feature film “The Color Purple,” which tells the story of three black women in post-slavery America through music, took fourth place in its first weekend.
The Warner Bros. film Still, starring three actresses Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks and adapted from the novel of the same name by Alice Walker, grossed $13 million.
