Timothée Chalamet was praised for his “charming, pitch-perfect performance” as Willy Wonka by critics who were finally allowed to share their first opinions on the “surprisingly good” origin story via X/Twitter.
“#Wonka is a super charming delight, powered by an exceptional and pitch-perfect performance from Timothée Chalamet,” said Collider senior producer Perri Nemiroff wrote.
“It can get pretty silly and there are a few plot lines that are a bit flimsy, but that couldn’t stop such an incredibly sweet film from warming my heart with a powerful and very effective dose of sincerity.”
Gizmodo senior reporter Germain Lussier wrote that the 27-year-old Oscar nominee was “the only reason to see Paul King’s $125 million musical fantasy.”
“He is endlessly charming [and] “It’s fun to watch,” Lussier tweeted.

“The film surrounding it isn’t that good, but it’s fun.” The story and tone fight against each other, making the whole thing seem a bit confusing. And yet it is full of joy and the songs are wonderful.”
Variety/The AV Club film critic Courtney Howard called Wonka “a winning confection of charm, whimsy and poignancy, driven by pure imagination and bright, upbeat musical numbers.”
“Timothée Chalamet is a charisma factory.” “His total commitment is intoxicating,” said Howard added.
‘Hugh Grant [as an Oompa-Loompa] in extraordinary IDGAF mode.’
IndieWire chief film critic David Ehrlich simply wrote: “Wonka good. Paul King, King.’
Vanity Fair critic Richard Lawson was also a man of few words: tweet: “WONKA is actually good.”
Bleeding Cool editor-in-chief Kaitlyn Booth said she was “surprised by how much” she liked Wonka.
“It’s whimsical and taps into the sense of wonder we got from the original while doing its own thing,” Booth tweeted.
“Timothée Chalamet channels the energy of Gene without leaving an impression.” “Great family film for the holidays.”
TheWrap film reporter Scott Mendelson wrote: “I didn’t expect #Wonka to be the most realistic human trafficking movie to hit theaters this year. “Not a criticism, but not a joke either.”
Mendelson’s colleague at TheWrap, Drew Taylor, called Wonka “a delicious confection, sometimes salty, sometimes sweet, but always visually stunning and emotionally rich.”
“Paul King proves once again that he is one of our most exciting filmmakers, creating a world that is unafraid to go to the dark, strange places like Roald Dahl would,” Taylor said tweeted.
Roger Ebert’s co-editor Robert Daniels “surprisingly enjoyed most of WONKA” and called Timothée “a truly gifted comedic actor who cleverly uses his star persona for laughs.”
“The production is good and there is a lot of heart and humor.” However, I didn’t like the flood of fat jokes. Bad form in a delightful film,” Daniels scoffed.
Jazz Tangcay, senior arts editor at Variety called Wonka was “visually delightful” and gave special praise to production designer Nathan Crowley: “His world-building is fantastic in every way.”
Fandango editor-in-chief Erik Davis published the most comprehensive review of the “sweet and heartfelt” film, which is not unlike Paul King’s Paddington films.

Timothée – who styles himself – accessorized his pantsuit with square-toe Chelsea boots and a custom Cartier choker set with 964 emeralds, rubellites, pink tourmalines and blue opals
“It also reminded me of #Annie in a way (Olivia Colman’s character gives off Miss Hannigan vibes throughout),” Davis said tweeted.
“Sweet, sophisticated, healthy and perfect for the whole family.” Timothée Chalamet asserts herself as the legendary Willy Wonka. Definitely not as dark and insane as Gene Wilder’s version. Chalamet’s Wonka is a young and naive dreamer who learns to use his talents with a little help from the friends he meets along the way.
“Thanks to Hugh Grant and Keegan-Michael Key for giving their best in their roles and stealing scenes.” Dad tip: Parents, grab a chocolate or candy set to take home with the kids after the movie To create your own treats.”
