Hasbro and the New York Times are collaborating to turn popular word puzzle game Wordle into a board game, the companies announced Thursday.
Flashback: Wordle, a daily word game bought by The New York Times in January for an undisclosed price, went viral after it was first released worldwide last October.
Details: The board game will be called Wordle: The Party Game and will be released in October. It can now be pre-ordered.
How it works: In the game, players compete to guess a secret word written by another player. The more rounds it takes to guess the right word, the more points a player earns. The player with the fewest points wins.
The big picture: The Times has published crosswords daily for decades, but recently began a broader foray into games and their potential for subscriptions.
What you say: “We are thrilled to be working with New York Times Games to bring our gaming worlds together and expand Wordle in new ways,” said Adam Biehl, SVP & General Manager of Hasbro Gaming, in the press release.
- “At The New York Times Games, our focus is on quality-crafted puzzles that everyone can experience together, which is why we’re so excited to partner with Hasbro to bring a fresh new format to the global sensation of Wordle,” said New Jonathan Knight, Gaming boss of the York Times.
