Works used for AI?: American comedian sues ChatGPT developer zdf.de

American comedian Sarah Silverman and two other authors sued OpenAI, developer of the ChatGPT platform, for alleged copyright infringement used to train artificial intelligence (AI). However, the works are protected by copyright. Silverman and authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey also sued Meta, Facebook’s parent company. Here, too, the charge is that his works were used to develop artificial intelligence.

The material used by OpenAI and Meta “is derived from copyrighted works – including plaintiffs’ books – copied by OpenAI and Meta without consent, without attribution and without compensation,” the lawyers said.

The European Parliament introduced a bill to regulate AI:

In the development of artificial intelligence, large amounts of data are evaluated to train programs. Meanwhile, authors’ complaints against this approach are mounting. Success in court could limit tech companies’ ability to develop AI.

OpenAI declined to comment on the process when asked by the AFP news agency. Meta initially did not respond to a request.
