SPLIT (Croatia) – A perfectly preserved wreck and cargo of amphorae from the third century BC. A unique spectacle was experienced by the underwater archaeologists from the Croatian Ministry of Culture when they dived into the waters of the island of Šćedro, a few miles south of the island of Korčula, in the past few days. According to the Croatian Ministry, it is one of the oldest and best preserved wrecks in the entire eastern Adriatic, based on its dating and state of preservation. The dives were conducted by underwater archaeologists Saša Denegri and Tea Katunarić Kirjakov. To date, the wreck was unknown. According to the Croatian Ministry of Culture, new archaeological research is being prepared to establish the historical context and elements needed to narrow down the discovery, and subsequently to ensure that the wreck can be protected, conserved and eventually presented to the public.
