X Raises $4.5M in Debut Weekend; Prequel Pearl coming soon

A24 brought out Ti West‘s new movie x over the weekend – West’s first horror film in 9 years! – a slasher that’s one of the wilder movies you’ll find in mainstream releases this year. In all honesty, just getting X to theaters at all was already a huge win for the horror genre, and it garnered enough fans to bring the film close to $5 million over the weekend.

X was released in 2,865 theaters It’s starting to get scared in several places starting Thursday evening $4,407,750 million in the United States from Thursday evening to Sunday.

The good news here is that a prequel to X has been commissioned and has in fact already been filmed, with a sequel to the title pearl teased after the credits of X in theaters. Instead of a post-credits scene, we were treated to an entire teaser trailer in which the upcoming Pearl revolves around the film’s villain. Mia Goth will reprise the role of Pearl, the film takes place decades before X.

West told Bloody Disgusting last week: “I’m very grateful that A24 did this. Part of the idea of this movie that I think is cool is that there’s a bigger thing. What I can tell you about Pearl, because we’ve already done it and it’s done, is that it’s very much a story about Pearl. This is how you learn more about them. It’s very different stylistically from X. You don’t need one without the other, but they enrich each other in specific ways. In the way X is influenced by, say, 1970s horror independent filmmaking and Americana cinema, Pearl is influenced by a very different era of filmmaking. When we do the third, it will be influenced by a different kind of cinema.”

“It was amazing. When [A24] We didn’t like the script, we just wouldn’t have done the film,” added West. “They were the only ones who made it work. I was in quarantine in New Zealand for two weeks when I wrote Pearl with this idea: “I don’t know if I could convince her, but if I could write something good enough” and Mia [Goth] and I would collaborate via FaceTime. I thought, ‘If we can get something that’s undeniably good enough. If you really believe in what you say you will do, you will do it.’ Then A24 called. They believed in it and we did the second.

“I look forward to seeing Pearl in the near future.”
