Both leaders will meet with the aim of normalizing bilateral relations and preventing the China-US confrontation from turning into a conflict.

The meeting between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. (local time) and last at least two hours.

The Chinese President and his American counterpart will attend the meeting at a hotel in Bali, accompanied by their advisers.

The first face-to-face meeting between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden since arriving at the White House will set the tone for the G20 summit, which is being hampered in the run-up by tensions surrounding the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

On the US side, they indicated that both presidents could discuss tensions around the South China Sea and Taiwan.

Another topic of the meeting will be North Korea, which has increased missile launching and testing. It’s also possible that the trade issue will be raised, specifically the tariffs former President Donald Trump has imposed on Chinese imports that Biden has retained.

Xi Jinping comes to the meeting after being elected to a third term.

The last time Xi Jinping and Joe Biden saw each other in person was in January 2017 when they met at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Disagreements between China and the US have grown over the past three years: from trade competition to controversies surrounding the origin of the pandemic.
