President Xi Jinping was re-elected this Sunday as general secretary of the Communist Party of China (PCCh) Central Committee, which held its 20th national congress last week, Telesur reports.
The re-election of the Asian giant’s president came as part of the first plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the PPCCH, held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Alongside Xi, the new Standing Committee consists of Wang Huning, director of the Bureau of Political Research of the CPC Central Committee, and Zhao Leji, secretary of the Disciplinary Committee, who were re-elected.
The new members of the Poliburo Standing Committee are Ding Xuexiang, director of the CPC General Bureau, Cai Qi, Li Xi and Li Qiang, CPC general secretaries in Beijing, Guangdong and Shanghai, respectively.
The new Central Committee consists of, among others, Prime Minister Li Keqiang, President of the National People’s Congress Li Zhanshu; the President of the Political Consultative Conference, Wang Yang; and the party secretary in Shanghai, Han Zheng.
Speaking to the domestic and foreign press, Xi Jinping stressed that the country will keep its policy of openness unchanged, create new opportunities for exchanges and rule out isolation because it cannot develop without contacts with the world, reports PL.
The President promised the continuity and strengthening of both this strategy and the reforms of laws and institutions, recalling the socio-economic benefits achieved since its implementation more than 40 years ago.
“The Chinese economy has great resilience and great potential, its strong fundamentals will not change and it will embark on a positive path,” he said after his re-election as general secretary of the Communist Party (PCCh) and heads of other major bodies.
Xi also pledged to work with the international community to promote peace, justice, security and a more inclusive model for progress and cooperation.
On the other hand, he pointed out that the CCP will always strive to renew itself while leading people in all aspects to realize the aspirations of modernity.
Aside from his re-election as General Secretary of the Communist Party, members of that organization’s Central Committee confirmed Xi Jinping on the Politburo payroll and in the position of Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
Since 2012, the president has led the communist force, which includes more than 96.7 million militants from all walks of socio-economic life and 4.9 million grassroots organizations. He had already been re-elected to this position in 2017.
The 20th National Congress of the CCP was held in Beijing from October 16-22
