Ximo Puig announces free public transport for 240000 young people

The President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has announced the extension of the free public transport pass for under-30s until July 31, extending the measure to the entire academic year, coinciding with the months with the most evictions. as he emphasized this Sunday during an interview on Cadena SER.

A total of 240,000 minors under the age of 30 residing in the Valencian Community already enjoy one of these free passes, which to date have facilitated four million journeys and resulted in savings of two million euros. These passes can be used on the Metrovalencia, TRAM d’Alacant, TRAM de Castelló, Metrobús and EMT transport services.

The head of the Valencian executive has highlighted that a measure that “has worked very well” is being extended and has committed to “supporting public transport while fighting against decarbonization”.

The Consell launched groundbreaking public transport savings initiatives last October to help citizens combat the impact of rising prices, particularly for fuel, cope with the current economic climate and promote sustainable mobility.

The Generalitat will also extend, until July 31, the funding of 50% of free urban transport for people under 30 in municipalities that wish to join this action. These savings are added to other current initiatives such as the new SUMA tickets or the 30% discount on the price of subscriptions for all users.

Ximo Puig has also pushed the implementation of a “Pla de Ferrocarrils” for the next decade, which will mean a “transformative” bet for the whole Valencian community in terms of low-emission public mobility. This plan envisages, among other things, the connection of the TRAM between Dénia and Gandia, between Orihuela and Torrevieja and between Altet Airport and Torrevieja.

Ximo Puig has indicated that “despite the sadness and the impact of the war in Ukraine” there have been very positive news in 2022, such as the arrival of Volkswagen. “It was very intense work and the relationship between the company and the Generalitat was always more sensitive, despite the difficult moments.”

“From the Consell we felt confident from the moment we had options before it was decided the place was Sagunto. The competition was very tough and in the end the Valencian community won against Germany. Our offer was based on competitiveness, well-trained human capital and prepared and well-developed industrial sites, as well as stability and social dialogue.”

Likewise, Ximo Puig has indicated that “it is not just about installing a Gigafactory in Sagunto, but about driving this disruptive change in the Spanish automotive industry, based on more sustainable mobility”.

Renewable Energy and Water

Regarding renewable energies, Ximo Puig has highlighted that the Generalitat currently has 64 files in progress that will be ready in the near future. “Commitment to renewables is a matter for the federal states and we have to make a big pact on this issue based on the technical reports. We are playing to go from a situation where we have to invest a large amount of resources in buying fossil fuels every year to a community that exports energy.”

On the subject of water, he pointed out that “no one is more interested in keeping a Tagus alive and in good condition than the Valencian community, which is ultimately the recipient of that water. We must stick to the ecological flow, but above all, show solidarity with a public resource like water. And there is no point in having water wars that lead nowhere.”

Finally, Puig recalled that the Consell had reduced taxes for 97% of the population of the Valencian Community “on the basis of an agreement that had the support of the entire political spectrum. We have reached an unusual agreement that has not been reached in any other autonomous community because of our way of agreement and dialogue.”
