The still leader of the Valencian Socialists, Ximo Puig, has announced his resignation as regional deputy, but will remain as senator for the time being. This was announced this Monday after announcing on Saturday his intention to “take a step back so that the project goes two steps forward” and to call an extraordinary congress that will appoint in a few months the new socialist leadership in the Valencian Community becomes. Puig has spoken of an “exciting” day as he puts an end to a phase that began in the Valencian Parliament in 1983. Puig, who has hardly participated in the Cortes since the beginning of the legislative period, takes with his resignation a further step in his intention to abandon politics in the front row after the results of the last regional elections of 23M, in which a good result was not enough he demanded called on him to renew a government of progress together with Podemos and Compromís.

After entering his resignation in the minutes, he said that this opens the possibility for “new generations to resolutely defend the project of self-government and social justice” against “the most reactionary government in history” in the Valencian Community, divided by will PPCV and Vox.

The next step, as early as 2024, will also be to forego the appointment of a territorial senator as Spain's ambassador to the OECD, as planned. Regarding the resignation of the leadership of the Valencian Socialists, for which an extraordinary party congress must be called, Ximo Puig has pointed to next February as a possible date for the election of the new party leadership. The still leader of the PSPV has once again spoken out in favor of a unified candidacy, calling for the greatest possible cohesion and the avoidance of “historical mistakes”, although he acknowledged that everyone has the right to run.

The departure of MPs Rebeca Torró and Arcadi España, who became state secretaries in Pedro Sánchez's government, has left the group helpless. The executive meeting held on Monday afternoon appointed the previous spokesperson of the Ministry of Finance, José Muñoz, as spokesperson of the group and the former president of the Provincial Council of Valencia, Toni Gaspar, as deputy spokesperson. The group's president will be Rosa Peris.

In conclusion, Puig praised the work of all the deputies with whom he shared a seat, “from different mindsets”, and thanked Valencians for trusting him in the elections. “I have tried to represent the Valencian people in the most dignified way, both in government and in opposition,” he said. “We emerged from corruption and indecency that should never happen again, but we should also never forget,” he added.
